How do you get relief from Carpal tunnel while waiting to have surgery?

My husband is going to have the surgery but he is in a lot of pain now. Meds don’t help and because it is work related it is workman’s comp so it is going to be dragging out for a while before surgery. I need something that maybe I can do to give him a little relief. He has it in both wrists and his elbow.

I know exactly what you’re talking about. Sometimes massage can help relieve pain. Massage in the neck area too. The nerve is there too. Stretch the wrist by pushing on the fingertips in the opposite direction. (away from wrist) And hold for a few counts. Icing can help too. Try Advil to help reduce swelling.

You could try applying heat and/or cold compresses to the area. Which ever one provides the best relief, go with that. Also, applying a topical ointment like Bio-Freeze or Icy Hot to the area and then wrapping it in an ace bandage may give some relief. Soaking might help also. If its OK with the doctor, try doubling up on the pain meds. Good luck my friend.

If he isnt responding from the pain meds ask the doctor to prescribe him oxycontin. Itd be working for most of the day plus thats what pain doctors do anyway, once you develop tolerance to the lower type meds (vicodin,percocet etc..) they usually give you oxycontin (oxycodone timed release). Hope this helps.

Have your doctor give you a Rx for pain medication until the operation.
Don’t let all the people that say stay away from the pain meds or you will be lost in the drug world. Those people don’t know what is is like to be in pain, if they did they wouldn’t say stupid crap.
ONLY your doctor knows what medications or PT is best for you prior to surgery

I’ve had several bouts of carpal tunnel in both wrists. What helps me is to ice the wrist joint on the inside at the base of the thumb and to wear wrist splints as much as possible especially at night. Also, taking Aleve or another NSAID helps relieve the inflammation. It takes a few days but, this usually makes the pain go away at least for a while.

Have had both hands done…..and before that I did alot of what so many on this site have told you to do……massage will help..icing helps…..Ibuprophen, and if the Doc will give you something different than what you have, that might help too…if he isnt responding to one med he might another…..good luck….hope all goes well with the surgery….and I hope it comes along soon, so your husband can get to healing and feel better…..
